Working with troubled pets is not something that we run away from at Arizona Active Paws. We know it can be difficult, but we also know that it’s possible to work with any dog when you communicate and set expectations
We recently got to work with a beautiful Rottweiler and implement our techniques. Candace contacted me initially for dog walking services as she was going to have knee surgery and needed someone to walk her large breed dog. The challenge was that Artemis is not always the friendliest with new people.
The Significance of Initial Contact
I found out that Artemis’ favorite treat is carrots so I told Candace to have Artemis behind the gate and I’d bring carrots when I first entered the premise. Candace was still worried about her pups reaction, but it’s important for the host to stay calm so her dog doesn’t react. We relaxed Candace, and started the plan.
Carrot in hand, I walked into the gate and fed a large barking Rottweiler while remaining calm. I showed Artemis that I was not a threat by calmly talking to her owner Candace and then rewarded Artemis when she acted well with more carrots. We quickly bonded as she got used to my scent, and that was the first hurdle cleared!
Handling Aggression During Walks
I soon found out that Artemis’ aggression would be problematic on our walks as well.
Candace had forgotten to mention that Artemis’ had a habit of lunging and growling with strangers as well. Artemis almost bit a gentleman in a hat but luckily I managed to catch her before contact was made. There was a lot of work to do.
Artemis and I built a strong bond over the next 2 and a half months and she is a changed doggie. Artemis was rewarded for good behavior and grew to trust the sound of my voice. It took time and effort to understand her and gain her trust and it was all worth it when we began introducing Artemis to new people and she responds positively! She is a happy and relaxed pup!
My primary reason to work with animals is to meet them on their level and have them feel safe and secure in my care. Candace can now have a peace of mind when introducing Artemis to new people and I’m grateful I got the opportunity to help!
Here are some important things to remember when working with troubled dogs:
Importance and Challenges of Communication
Communicating with animals can be a challenge.
The main thing to remember is to set expectations. Setting expectations is very similar to our human interactions with children. When explaining your intent for our furry friends, it’s important to facilitate strong body language and do it consistently. Also have a hefty amount of nutritious treat to reward good behaviors.
Gaining trust and respect is my main goal for all living creatures. Once you have established familiarity and tone of voice you are usually in the win. :D Working with animals that are particularly difficult and characterized as problem children is something we are proud of at Arizona Active Paws.
Just using the simple tactic of greeting a dog with a healthy freeze-dried treat allows me to hang with them until they are comfortable. It takes time and trust which I am willing to put in because every creature is important and I put 100 percent of my capabilities and work into them. I firmly believe that some animals are selective in who they trust, just as people do. They are smart and know who is willing to understand them give them patience.
